DO’S and DON’TS of Search Engine Optimisation

What to avoid and how to improve rankings in search engines. Thanks to

  • Make pages for users, not for search engines.
  • Make a site with a clear structure and when ever possible use text links for navigation.
  • Sites must be useful, rich in information, text heavy, and above all written clearly and accurately describing the content.
  • Offer a site map to users with deep links pointing to the most influential and important parts of the site.
  • Care should be taken with duplicate content.
  • Allow search bots to crawl your site without session IDs or redirections due to cache or software limitations, as these may impact on the ability of the crawler to navigate around the site.
  • In the early stages some preparation regarding the keywords users might use to find your pages would be beneficial.
  • Always use text when ever possible for images, names and content.
  • Navigation should always be as text. The navigation text should also be descriptive to the page that it links to.
  • Make sure that your Meta TITLE, Meta DESCRIPTION, Meta KEYWORDS and ALT tags are descriptive, accurate and individual to each page.
  • Use H1’s, H2’s and H3’s.
  • Check for broken links/ obsolete pages and ensure the HTML coding is clean and correct.
  • Avoid pages that use excessive pop-ups, these can interfere with user navigation.
  • Avoid using the words “sponsored”, “featured” and “directory” when referring to links.
  • Using a dynamic page creator in .php .asp .net Cold Fusion etc (often signified by the URL containing a “?” character), can cause search engine spiders to fail to crawl the pages properly.
  • It is sometimes useful to use a robots.txt file on the web server. This file is used to advise the search engine crawlers which pages and directory/folder it can or cannot crawl.
